Weekly Update - May 9th, 2024

Dear ECS Family,

Tonight is the Logic and Rhetoric School Band concert. I believe there was some confusion about the time, and I apologize for that. The correct time is 5:00 PM.

Tomorrow Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Woodard have their respective class graduations. Please make sure to follow the directions from each teacher about those events.

We have a scheduled day off on Tuesday, May 14th, which is West Virginia’s primary election day. Scripture commands us to pray for those in authority, and I think it is appropriate to pray that righteous rulers are nominated and elected.

I want to simplify our dress code expectations for next year. These will be in the new Handbook, and you’ll start to see some changes on Land’s End. One thing to note is girls will have black polos available starting next year. Over time, these will replace the yellow polos. Students may continue to wear the yellow polos, including on logo days. Over the summer, you’ll see the black polo become an option for girls.

We have a fundraiser coming up with Ella’s Playtown. Each family will receive 5 tickets they can sell, good for admission to Ella’s Playtown on Tuesday, May 21st until 7:00 PM. The tickets cost $14, and half of all proceeds go to ECS to help with the development of an outdoor classroom space. Any purchases in the Ella’s Playtown cafe will also contribute to this total. Any tickets not sold must be returned to the school office. If you need more tickets, please request them from the school office. We are thankful for this opportunity, and especially for Ella’s Playtown being willing to designate half of all sales for the fundraiser.

Our school-wide activity day is Thursday, May 23rd. Students should dress casually and be prepared to participate in a variety of activities (such as street hockey, basketball, balloon stomps, etc.).

Finally, three years ago we began to the transition to classical Christian education. Some of our curriculum changes over the last few years are already intended to reflect that. Some of those changes will be implemented next year. To help all families understand this transition I’ve started a series of posts called “Curriculum Benchmarks.” The first two posts in this series are now available on the Moxie & Mettle blog, I’ll also be recording audio/video for some of these posts. I want every family to understand our philosophy of education, our commitments as a Christian school, and how that impacts our day-to-day functioning.

God bless,
Headmaster Batten
